As many of us enter a period marked by family, joy and celebration, we should also remember that, for too many people, it will be one where survival is the only objective. The Royal College of Midwives echoes the statement published in The Lancet by the World Health Organization’s Strategic and Technical Advisory Group of Experts on maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health and nutrition and their call to end humanitarian catastrophe.

From Syria to Sudan, Ukraine to Israel and Gaza, women and babies are bearing the brunt of conflicts over which they have no control. We urge all of those with agency to use their collective efforts to bring an end to the hostilities and humanitarian catastrophes across the world.

Peace on earth is something synonymous with this time of year. Let us hope, for all those who find themselves in conflict zones, that this can become a sustainable reality.
