Midwife from St Helens and Knowsley wins top UK award

on 28 March 2019 RCM Annual Midwifery Awards RCM Member Workplace representatives

Sarah Jones, a midwife from St. Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, has been named the Thompsons Member Champion at the Royal College of Midwives' (RCM's) Annual Midwifery Awards 2019.

This award category recognises any RCM-accredited activist, workplace or learning representative, MSW advocate or branch officer who has been nominated by RCM members or the Regional/National Officer for their work on behalf of members.

BBC One Show presenter Alex Jones hosted the awards ceremony held in London earlier this week (Tuesday March 5th) and presented Sarah with her award.

Sarah was nominated in this category as she is a really active workplace representative for the RCM and fully engages with management at the trust as part of her staff-side duty. This ensures the RCM has a very strong voice within the trust.

Organising branch events and keeping members up to date with the latest RCM professional and policy news via a dedicated branch Facebook Page are just some of the things Sarah does to keep her branch especially active.

Commenting, the judges said; “Sarah really keeps herself up to date by attending RCM regional workplace study days and was actively involved in the Caring for You campaign. She has bought about really positive cultural changes in the workplace through her campaign work."

Gill Walton, CEO and General Secretary at the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) said; “Sarah has displayed remarkable enthusiasm and dedication in promoting the work of the RCM in the workplace and she thoroughly deserves this award. Sarah has also supported and represented members during difficult times and her commitment to her role is really appreciated, not only by the RCM, but her colleagues are very grateful to her too; so congratulations to Sarah.”

Victoria Phillips, Head of Employment Rights (Client Relations) at Thompsons Solicitors, said; “The trade union movement continues to play a vital role in protecting the rights of workers across the UK. Midwives have an undeniably difficult job, and the stories of those who go above and beyond for other members is nothing short of amazing.

“Thompsons is delighted to join the RCM and highlight the unsung heroines in the world of midwifery, through the sponsorship of the Workplace Champion Award. Local representatives, such as Sarah, are the lifeblood of the trade union movement and act as an important first port of call for those seeking our legal expertise. We are glad she has received the recognition she deserves.”
