The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) is today celebrating having scooped ‘Best Digital Member Communication’ at the TUC’s Annual Communications Awards.

The RCMs’ winning entry was a series of short video animations on FGM which form part of the RCM’s campaign to highlight the ongoing practice of FGM here in the UK and end FGM by 2030.

Janet Fyle Professional Policy Advisor at RCM collected the award along with FGM campaigner, psychotherapist and founder of the Dahlia project Leyla Hussein.

Launched in parliament in late 2017 the RCM worked closely with FGM survivors to ensure the authenticity of the stories being told via in the animations remained true to the realities of surviving FGM.

The films where created to raise awareness around the health and physiological consequences of FGM and each animation importantly, each of the FGM animations ends with a ‘call to act’ on each UK Government.

The series of  short animated films where  developed by the RCM in collaboration with The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), The Royal College General Practitioners (RCGP), survivors of FGM, NGOs and a variety local community partners.

Commenting on the RCM’s winning entry the judges said; “These powerful animations are deeply moving. A great effort by a trade union to positively effect society around them my mobilising their members.

“Survivors voices are the centre of this impressive resource. The videos deserve much more views.”

Commenting Jon Skewes, Executive Director for External Relations at the RCM said; “We are delighted the RCM’s member communications has been recognised by the TUC particularly in such competitive category. I wish to congratulate all the team here at the RCM for delivering this award winning project.

“In particular I wish to congratulate Janet Fyle and FGM campaigner Leyla Hussein. Their incredible work and tireless campaigning to end FGM is remarkable and rightly deserves to be awarded.”
