RCM celebrates midwifery excellence

The RCM Annual Midwifery Awards 2018 took place yesterday (6 March) highlighting outstanding achievements in midwifery across the UK.

The glitzy ceremony was held in London where some 13 awards were handed out to hardworking individuals and teams who have made a difference to women, families and newborns.

RCM president Kathryn Gutteridge opened the ceremony by presenting honorary fellowships to David Foster, Rona McCandlish and Gail Johnson (all pictured below with the RCM president) for their outstanding contributions to the profession. Read more on the new RCM honorary fellows here.

Presenting the awards was Good Morning Britain presenter Charlotte Hawkins, who said she was thrilled to be at the event and took the opportunity to share her memory of her midwife – an old school friend – and to share how valued and appreciated midwives and maternity staff are.

Speaking at the awards, RCM chief executive Gill Walton said: This is our annual opportunity to say look at the amazing things we do and to share the best practice and create collaborations to protect families and babies. We have had a record number of entries this year and I want to say well done to each and every one of you who has been shortlisted – you’re fantastic and are contributing to better care.’
