The PRactical Obstetric Multi-Professional Training (PROMPT) programme aims to make childbirth safer through training, education and research.

The multi-professional training has been launched in partnership with obstetricians, midwives and anaesthetists, and will run in a cascade training format with training sessions held within local services.

The Wales Maternity Network believes that PROMPT Wales will enhance situational awareness, human factors and will change the culture within maternity settings.

Successful pilots of PROMPT have been undertaken in Abertawe Bro Morgannwg, Aneurin Bevan and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Boards.

National lead midwife for PROMPT Wales Sarah Hookes said: ‘PROMPT Wales is collaborating with the seven health boards across Wales, enhancing multi-professional relationships by learning and training together. PROMPT Wales focuses on improving teamwork and communication, both of which are associated with improvements in safety and the birth experience.’

RCM Wales director Helen Rogers said she welcomes the introduction of PROMPT in Wales: 'I am pleased to see a clear strategy, which will help to deliver effective multidisciplinary training in Welsh maternity services. The safety of mothers and babies is key and this training can help to enhance safety, positive teamworking and effective communication.'
