MIDIRS to transfer over to the RCM

Members of NCT have voted in favour of transferring ownership of the Midwives Information and Resource Service (MIDIRS) to the RCM.

The decision to amend the charity’s articles and enable the transfer was made at the NCT AGM on 13 October.

Over the past 18 months the two organisations have been in detailed discussions about securing the future of the already successful MIDIRS service, which was established by midwives for midwives, and provides information, research and guidance to support their work.  

RCM executive director for services to members Suzanne Tyler said that transferring MIDIRS from the NCT to the RCM will return MIDIRS to its natural home within the midwifery community.  

‘This will undoubtedly further strengthen and enhance the services the RCM offers its members with our existing magazine Midwives and our online learning platforms i-learn and i-folio’ she said.

Suzanne added: ‘This transfer has come about because of the mutually respectful and trusting relations between the RCM and NCT; both organisations seeking to do what is best for MIDIRS, for midwives and for women.’
 
NCT executive director for communications and development Sam Grimstone said: ‘This is an exciting time and opens possibilities for MIDIRS to reach even greater numbers of midwives in the UK and abroad. The MIDIRS staff team and its advisory committee and editorial board have been involved in the discussions about how the transfer will work and are all supportive of the plan.

‘Over the coming months the NCT and RCM will work together to ensure a safe and smooth transition, with no change for existing subscribers.’
