Midwife dedicated to addressing cultural inequalities becomes RCM Fellow

A midwife from Manchester who has dedicated her career to addressing health inequalities in maternity services and committed herself to improving services not only for women, but for her colleagues has been awarded an RCM Fellowship.

Benash Nazmeen who has currently works as a Midwifery Educator at the University of Nottingham has also co-designed and runs a Cultural Competency and Safety Workshops for maternity Health care professionals.

Commenting RCM’s Chief Executive, Gill Walton said “I’m so pleased to welcome Benash into our special RCM Fellowship category of members. Benash has a unique understanding of the barriers faced by maternity service users from minority ethnic backgrounds. The work she has done in raising the challenges faced by these women and improving cultural awareness among midwives not only in Bolton but right across the UK is of huge value to us all. She has shown exemplary leadership in this area and her passion and drive are a real inspiration.”

Benash is a co-founder and director of the Association of South Asian Midwives, a platform for marginalised members of the midwifery workforce and a trustee for the Iolanthe Midwifery Trust.

She is also a specialist advisor with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for midwifery, leadership, equality, diversity and inclusion and is also on the MBRRACE-UK Perinatal Confidential Enquiry review panel.

 

On becoming an RCM Fellow, Benash said;

“It is a pleasure and privilege to accept this Fellowship. Equity in care and in the workforce is everybody’s responsibility. We can only do better when we are better supported, better informed and better aware of the issues that surround marginalised midwives, women and birthing people. Thank you to the RCM for this platform which will enable us to to support and address these concerns together.”

 

The RCM has said it is looking forward to working alongside Benash to see how the longer-term outcome-based evidence of how her work can be implemented on a wider scale as a Fellow of the Royal College of Midwives.

 

The RCM Fellows where awarded their accolades at the RCM’s annual Education and Research conference which is taking place in Coventry on the 23-24 March.
