A consultant midwife and former Royal College of Midwives (RCM) President has been awarded with an Honorary Fellowship from the RCM at its Annual Midwifery Awards. Dr. Kathryn Gutteridge received her award at a glittering awards ceremony in London hosted by musician and broadcaster Myleene Klass.
Kathryn, who was the RCM’s President from 2017 until July this year, began her career in the 1970s, starting out as a nurse before training as a midwife. Midwifery was always her ambition and in particular, midwife led care.
Having established herself as a consultant midwife, Kathryn has a long history of clinical care in the NHS and has used her expert knowledge in diverse settings including neonatal services and community midwifery care.
Commenting, the RCM’s Chief Executive Gill Walton said;
“Kathryn’s lifetime work and commitment to midwives and the women they care for is inspiring and deserves to be recognised. Having worked closely with Kathryn for over four years as RCM President, her passion for midwifery and maternity care shines through everything she does. It’s a privilege to have her join the ranks of the RCM Honorary Fellows.”
Kathryn has a reputation for representing women’s psychological and mental wellbeing during this vulnerable stage of their lives. Further to this, Kathryn founded Sanctum Midwives, an organisation that educates, represents, and challenges stigma around sexual abuse and its impact during motherhood.
Kathryn is also an experienced author and national and international presenter, specialising in emotional wellbeing during childbirth and women maintaining control over their choices.
Having received her award, Dr. Kathryn Gutteridge said;
“I am delighted to be given this award which recognises my lifetime of midwifery work. There is no greater honour than being held in high regard by my friends and colleagues”.
