The Scottish Government has announced that they will immediately pay the 4% pay award offered to NHS staff, with the increase backdated to December 2020. The news follows Royal College of Midwives (RCM) members in Scotland voting to accept the Scottish Government’s pay offer.
Jon Skewes, Executive Director for External Relations at the Royal College of Midwives (RCM), said: "This is great news for our midwife and maternity support worker members in Scotland. They voted to accept the Scottish Government's offer and this gives them the very well deserved early and significant pay rise the RCM has been campaigning for.
"It is now time for the Government in Westminster to step up to the plate and reconsider its derisory and insulting 1% offer to staff in England; one that borders on insolence. They equally deserve a pay award to make up for years of stagnant pay. Failing to do this could see England's NHS staff voting with their feet and walking out of the door. With serious shortages across midwifery and other health professional groups, this is something the NHS can ill-afford."
