RCM urges action on Jersey maternity service review

on 08 July 2021 Midwives NHS Pregnancy Women Maternity Services

A review of maternity services has been published by Jersey’s Health and Social Security Scrutiny Panel.

Commenting on the review, Vicky Richards, the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) National Officer, said: “Midwives and their colleagues in Jersey are working incredibly hard to deliver safe and high-quality care. However, the system and buildings they are working in are not supporting them to do that as well as they would want. That is why this review is so important for them, and for the women on the Island, whose choices around pregnancy and birth are limited compared with much of the UK.

“This is a really positive report for the future of Jersey’s maternity services and the care it will be able to deliver for women, babies and their families. The focus on emotional and mental wellbeing along with women’s physical health, and putting women’s needs at the centre of their care is very welcome indeed. It is also encouraging to see the importance of midwifery leadership recognised to the safety and quality of services.

“If the report’s recommendations are taken on-board it will be a transformative step to better care for women and a more positive environment for maternity staff.  Some of the recommended changes are significant and staff will need the right training and support to be able to deliver on the review’s commendable vision.  The RCM now urges the Minister for Health and Social Services and the Government of Jersey to act on it without delay.”
