on 16 March 2021 Maternity Services
A South London midwife has received a prestigious Royal College of Midwives (RCM) Fellowship for her inspiring midwifery work. Carmel Lloyd, Head of Education and Learning at the RCM received the award at the RCM’s virtual Education Conference today.
Carmel’s Fellowship has been awarded for her career-long commitment to midwifery through her work clinically, in education, regulation and the professional association. Her involvement in midwifery education and regulation has contributed to make midwifery practice safer, better, and continually evolving and thriving into the 21st century.
Carmel said: I am delighted and honoured to have been awarded the Fellowship of the RCM and I would like to thank all my colleagues, friends and family who have supported me throughout my career. I am looking forward to continuing to work with the RCM as a Fellow, supporting members to provide high quality midwifery care to women and their newborn babies.
In a midwifery career of over 40 years Carmel worked initially in front-line NHS maternity units and then undertook further education and training to become a midwifery lecturer working in universities. She moved into a national role with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), where she led on the development of standards for midwifery practice. Carmel has been in her current RCM role since 2014, spearheading the RCM’s education and learning programme used by midwives, maternity support workers and students across the UK, Ireland and globally.
Gill Walton, Chief Executive of the RCM, said: “The scope of Carmel’s midwifery career is breath-taking, and it is this experience that has massively benefitted the RCM and its members. Along the way she has contributed so much to the profession be it directly caring for mothers and babies or supporting midwives and others in their continuing education and professional development.
“This is an award that could not go to someone more dedicated and committed to supporting the work of midwives, student midwives and maternity support workers. Carmel’s influence on the profession has been profound and I congratulate her heartily on this award.”
