The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) in Scotland has secured an offer of a 4% pay increase for midwives and maternity support workers in Scotland.
Crucially the RCM says the Government has agreed to backdate the pay increase to 1 December 2020 and all Agenda for Staff are set to benefit. The RCM says it will now consult with its members in Scotland on this offer.
The offer follows weeks of negotiations between the RCM and other Scottish Trade Unions with NHS Employers and the Scottish Government. In addition to the RCM’s campaign to Deliver a Decent Deal which involved lobbying and discussions with Scottish politicians.
Commenting, RCM’s National Officer for Scotland, Jackie Mitchell says:
“This offer of a 4% pay rise for our hardworking members in Scotland is good news. Midwives and all maternity staff thoroughly deserve a decent pay rise, as do all NHS staff across the UK. We are pleased that these negotiations have happened before the elections take place is Scotland and shows us that the Government values the hard work and commitment of our members.”
All RCM members in bands 5, 6 and 7 are set to receive this increase and lower paid Agenda for Change staff are expected to receive a flat rate increase. The offer comes after NHS staff in Scotland received a £500 pro rata bonus in recognition of their tireless efforts during COVID-19.
The RCM’s Executive Director for External Relations and one of the NHS Unions lead negotiators, Jon Skewes said: “Lots of hard work and negotiations have happened to get to this point. An offer of 4%, before the start of April when all NHS staff across the UK are due a pay increase and one which is significant, early and backdated is what the RCM has been lobbying and campaigning for.
“Sadly, the same cannot be said yet for our members in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Scotland again have led the way with their pay offer. The Scottish Government have just proved a significant and backdated offer is affordable so let’s do the same for midwives, maternity support workers and all NHS workers across UK.”
