Value NHS staff and award early and significant pay rise says RCM

Welcoming the report from the NHS Confederation on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on NHS staff, Jon Skewes, Executive Director for External Relations at the Royal College of Midwives, said: “Yet another report highlights the incredible contribution of midwives, maternity support workers and other NHS staff during the pandemic. It rightly focuses on the impact it has had on black, Asian and minority ethnic staff, who have been hit disproportionately by it. Their wellbeing and their safety, along with all their colleagues, must be an urgent focus for employers.  

“Government and employers must also give our NHS staff the resources they need to cope with the demands on them. This means addressing the serious midwifery and other NHS staff shortages. They must also reward staff for their efforts, before, during and for when this pandemic has passed. That is why the RCM is calling for an early and significant pay rise for midwives, maternity support workers and their NHS colleagues. The report rightly says we must value, care for and look after our NHS staff. It is now time to swap words for deeds and do the right thing. Staff who are given the resources they need, and who are supported, valued and fairly rewarded, deliver better and safer care.”
