A midwife with exemplary leadership skills who has transformed her local and regional maternity services has scooped the RCM’s Leadership Award for 2020.
In 2014 Patricia Ryan took up her role as Head of Midwifery at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
Since then she has strengthened their maternity services year on year by investing in training and career progression for both midwives and maternity support workers (MSWs) in particular by introducing the role of a consultant midwife, increasing the number of specialist midwives to meet the needs of women in the area and overall strengthened both the clinical and safeguarding governance of Luton’s busy maternity service.
Commenting, Gill Walton Chief Executive of the RCM said: “It gives me great pleasure to congratulate Patricia on her well-deserved Leadership award, she has worked tirelessly over the past six years to transform maternity services and increase the quality of care women and their babies are receiving. Just last year we launched RCM’s Leadership Manifesto with a hope of what supporting positive leadership in maternity services with the right investment can do and Patricia is a fantastic example of this, she is clearly a maternity leader with passion and drive for service improvement, she has continually strived to improve maternity care and safety and has inspired her colleagues to do the same and that’s certainly something to be celebrated.”
Patricia and her team have overcome many challenges, and championed the implementation of Grow, which resulted in a 50% reduction in term stillbirths in 2017 and 2018. She also has a proven record of successfully implementing numerous service improvements for a challenging and vulnerable local population.
