The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) has welcomed the recommendations made by The Council of Deans of Health in The Academic Workforce in Health Faculties report.
The report reflects the findings of a recent Freedom of Information (FOI) request by the RCM to midwifery educators which revealed a downward trend in the number of midwifery teaching staff per institution.
Responding, Carmel Lloyd Head of Education and Learning at the RCM said: “The RCM welcomes the recommendations in this report as they support the RCMs current work on strengthening leadership development in midwifery. Succession planning is also something that must be made a key priority.
“Last year we launched the RCMs Leadership Manifesto because we believe that strengthening and supporting sustainable midwifery leadership in education and research is crucial. Our educators are training our future midwives and that is where the investment must start, because midwifery education is the foundation upon which we rely to ensure we can deliver safe, high-quality care to women and their families.”
