Midwife with more than 30 years experience awarded RCM Fellowship

The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) has awarded a midwife with more than thirty years experience with a prestigious RCM Fellowship Award.

Midwife Sarah Gregson qualified from Queen Charlottes in London in 1984 and in 2004 she was awarded a Master’s degree in Advancing Midwifery Practice at Kings College, London.  During her career she has worked as a practicing midwife in several maternity units in the South east of England and recently retired from her Consultant Midwife post at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust.

Sarah has also pioneered a broad range of care initiatives. These include improving midwifery care for women who become critically ill during childbirth in the early 2000’s, the development of a new free standing midwifery led unit at Maidstone in 2011 and she remains committed to enabling care that is person centred, safe and high quality and supporting midwifery colleagues to reach their potential.

Sarah who has dedicated her life to midwifery continues to volunteer with the RCM’s Global Twinning Project in Bangladesh and also works part time as a midwifery advisor.

The RCM’s Fellowship scheme recognises midwives/individuals who provide exceptional leadership and deliver excellence in practice, education or research.

Commenting, RCM President Kathryn Gutteridge said; “Sarah throughout her diverse career has demonstrated a strong dedication and passion for midwifery and has worked tirelessly to deliver and improve midwifery care for women. Notably she undertook research investigating the postnatal care of premature babies and introduced various complementary therapies into clinical practice.

“Her lifelong dedications to midwifery practice both here in the UK and across many global projects should be an inspiration to us all.”

Commenting on her award Sarah Gregson said; “My many years of work as a midwife have been an absolute privilege and I feel incredibly honoured and lucky to receive the RCM Fellowship award.”

Four other midwives have received this national award also from the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) for their contribution to midwifery.

  • Dianne Garland SRN RM ADM PGCEA MSc, Founder of MidwifeExpert
  • Professor Julia Sanders PhD midwife, researcher and professional leader,Cardiff University.
  • Professor Sara Kenyon, Professor of Evidence Based Maternity Care, University of Birmingham
  • Amanda Mansfield, Consultant Midwife and Interim Professional Nurse Lead, London Ambulance Service NHS Trust

All five midwives received their Fellowship yesterday at the Royal College of Midwives Education Conference in Bristol. A separate media release with more detail on each winner is available from the RCM media office.
