RCM commends London trust for introduction of paid leave for parents of premature babies
on 18 February 2019 Maternity Leave Premature Birth
The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) has commended University College London Hospitals (UCLH) on its introduction of extra support and paid leave to staff whose babies have been born prematurely or for those who may need extra special care.
Commenting, Clare Livingstone Professional Policy Advisor at the RCM said; “The RCM commends the staff policy change on additional paternity leave for parents of sick babies at UCLH.
"Having a baby born prematurely or unwell is an extremely stressful time for any parent and it may be weeks or even months before a parent can bring their child home for the first time. During that period, a lot of parents will have to balance working and spending time with their sick or premature baby and looking after other children or family members that they may care for. The pressure this puts on both mothers and fathers is unimaginable.
“Often parent’s have no other choice, but to take unpaid leave at the end of maternity leave and the financial burden this puts on families can be unbearable. So the RCM are delighted that UCLH are leading the way and supporting parents of sick and premature babies and we would urge all Trusts to consider doing the same for their staff.”
