Gill Walton Chief Executive and General Secretary of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) has been recognised with an honorary degree from the University of West London (UWL).
The honour comes as recognition for her midwifery leadership having dedicated her career to transforming midwifery care for women and their families.
Throughout her career, Gill has been engaged in clinical practice, midwifery clinical education, quality and governance, NHS Management and Professional Leadership and since September 2017 has been chief executive of the RCM.
From 2000 to 2004 Gill was the Director of Midwifery at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading and worked with NHS Improvement where she supported Morecambe Bay Maternity Services.
Now as the RCM’s leader Gill has works with midwives, maternity support workers and women to influence the local, national and international agenda of maternity care.
Through the RCM, Gill is a global ambassador of UK midwifery and advocate for healthcare staff and parents to enhance the quality of midwifery and maternity care and enrich the experience of childbirth for mothers and families.
Commenting, Gill Walton chief executive and General Secretary; “I am absolutely delighted to receive this award and so proud to have had such an amazing career as a midwife supporting women and families during pregnancy, birth and parenthood.
“I want all women and all midwives to be safe and secure, and this award is not just for me, but for the profession I represent which is the intervention that will change the world.”
Gill was made an Honorary Doctor of Science at the University’s second day of graduation ceremonies in Twickenham Stadium on Friday 22nd November
