TAMBA report highlights the importance of role of specialist midwife for multiple births

Today, TAMBA - the twins and multiple births charity - published the findings of its Maternity Engagement project which has supported maternity units to implement NICE standards concerning multiple pregnancy.

The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) has been involved is are very supportive of the project. TAMBA say that if the project is expanded and implemented across the NHS, it could prevent many stillbirths, reduce the number of emergency caesarean sections and neonatal admissions. The report also states that it could save the NHS £8 million per year.

Commenting Gill Walton, Chief Executive and General Secretary of the Royal College of Midwives(RCM), said: "This is an important project that demonstrates how to successfully engage with maternity providers to improve outcomes and to save lives.

“The report highlights the importance of the role of the specialist midwife for multiple births and how midwifery continuity of carer improves outcomes and experiences for women and their families.

“All of us should be doing all we can to deliver safer more personalised care and we need to see the Government supporting all maternity units to implement NICE guidelines to ensure mothers and their babies are receiving safe high quality care.”
