Today Scotland’s Health Secretary Jeane Freeman has announced an increase in the number of student midwives in training for the next year.

There has been a 35 percent (35%) drop in the number of applicants to midwifery courses since 2013, that’s according to the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) who have analysed the latest UCAS data on applications to midwifery courses in England.

The number of student midwives and nurses entering Scottish Government funded degree programmes will increase by 10.8% in 2018/19. The increase will mean a recommended intake of 3,724, up from 3,360 in 2017/18.
