Two bereavement midwives from Southampton University Trust have been recognised by the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) with a national award for Excellence in Bereavement Care.

Linsi Imber & Kirsty Brown who also work clinically as midwives have shown commitment, compassion and dedication to improving bereavement services and the experience of women and their families who have lost a baby. They have been praised for their visibility on the labour ward where they provide assistance and invaluable support to colleagues.

They are with women and their families from the beginning until the end, providing support from a diagnosis of pregnancy loss, care during labour and postnatally.  Over the last year they have also worked to improve the environment in which families stay and have joined forces with their local children's hospice to offer the option of transferring care there when requested.

Commenting, Gill Walton Chief Executive of the RCM said:

“One of the saddest events in life is to lose and child. It’s utterly devastating for parents and having the right bereavement care and support services in place is crucial. The care that parents receive currently is of crucial importance for their physical and mental health. On behalf of the RCM I want to congratulate both Linsi and Kirsty on their well-deserved award and thank them for being with women and their families during such a heart-breaking time.”
