‘Lasting cultural changes in learning, leadership and multi-professional working are the key to tackling the number of incidents in our maternity services’, according to the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) in response to the latest report from the Each Baby Counts initiative.
Responding to the report, RCMs Head of Quality and Safety, Zeenath Uddin said:
“Each one of these statistics contained within this report, means tremendous loss and suffering for parents and families. We must do all we can to continue to work collaboratively, across teams, to ensure that these incidents continue to be a rarity and are further reduced. It is only through thorough investigation and implementation of recommendations that lessons can be learned from tragic losses. We also need to capture this information at a higher level and make lasting cultural changes in learning, leadership and multi-professional working. Joint working with the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists has already created opportunity to be at cutting edge of a something with the potential to improve outcomes for women and babies and really make a difference.
“The RCM remains committed to ensuring that UK maternity care is one of the safest in the world. We must continue to put in place evidence-based measures and care bundles that genuinely save lives across every maternity unit in the UK. Each Baby Counts Learn and Support, in collaboration with other safety projects is a step in the right direction.”

Each Baby Counts: Learn & Support is a three-year partnership between the RCOG and RCM, supported and funded by supported and funded by the Department of Health and Social Care, that will work with a number of local maternity units to support multi-professional learning and clinical leadership, improve joint working and drive innovation from within the NHS.
Launched in 2014 by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and supported by the RCM Each Baby Counts is a national quality improvement programme that aims to reduce the number of babies who die or are left severely disabled as a result of incidents that happen during term labour. the Department of Health and Social Care, that will work with a number of local maternity units to support multi-professional learning and clinical leadership, improve joint working and drive innovation from within the NHS.
