A midwife from London who has made a significant difference to the lives of some of the most vulnerable women in society has been honoured with a Fellowship from the Royal College of Midwives (RCM). Juliet Albert’s work as community midwife led her to supporting women who had undergone Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
In 2003 Juliet began campaigning to improve services for pregnant women. In 2007 she set up the first midwife-led community-based FGM clinic, the Acton African Well Woman Centre, where women could self-refer, regardless of where they live.
She has since been a project manager for the Department of Health’s FGM Prevention Programme and been involved in writing policy and delivering multi-professional training around the country to midwives and other healthcare professionals working on FGM.
Commenting on her Fellowship, Juliet Albert said: “It’s such a great honour to receive a Fellowship from the RCM. I’m so thrilled to have this recognition from the RCM and hopefully it will inspire the next generation of midwives.
“My passions are to ensure that women with FGM get the best possible care and also to support women who are struggling to breastfeeding. But in general, I’m so lucky to do something I really love - and that is being a midwife.”

As a specialist FGM midwife Juliet has worked tirelessly as an advocate and campaigner to ensure specialist clinics remain in the community and are accessible to vulnerable women who need the expert care and support, they provide. Juliet has worked hard to ensure FGM specialist midwives are supported to deliver high quality care and throughout her midwifery career has focused on personalised care, informed choice and delivery continuity of care to hundreds of women throughout their pregnancies.”
