Commenting on the publication of regulations for the provision of abortion services in Northern Ireland, the Director of the Royal College of Midwives in Northern Ireland Karen Murray said:

“We now have the regulations under which women and girls living in Northern Ireland will be able to access safe, compassionate abortion services. This is truly a milestone.

“We are nonetheless disappointed that the opportunity has been missed to implement a modern framework for abortion. We have instead kept much of the weakness of abortion law that has applied in the rest of the UK for 50 years. This was a chance to learn from the past that was sadly missed. It is however a long overdue and positive step forward.”
