The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) in Scotland says it is imperative that the problems identified in a review published today on maternity services at Dr Gray’s in Elgin are addressed quickly.

The RCM’s Scotland Director, Mary Ross-Davie, said: “

“The RCM welcomes the publication of the review of maternity services at Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin. It is clear from the review that there have been significant cultural and professional problems within the hospital which have unacceptably put women and babies at risk. It is imperative that the work already begun by NHS Grampian to address these problems is progressed quickly and effectively, in particular the recommendation to develop a midwifery-led service, based on the principles of Best Start."

The report says that the Alan Cameron Dr Gray’s Hospital Maternity Services Review has identified a number of important safety concerns that must be addressed.

Mary Ross-Davie added:

“Women and families in Moray deserve the highest quality maternity care, supported by the right resources, from the buildings in which they access services, to the equipment, to the staff. The development of maternity services in Raigmore Hospital will also enable women in the West of Moray to have shorter distances to travel to access consultant led care when needed.”
