Royal visit for award winning Medway maternity services

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal who is a patron of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) met a award-winning team of midwives, maternity support workers (MSWs), student midwives and other members of maternity staff at Medway Maritime Hospital this week

During the visit Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal also met with an MSW who had just given birth to a baby boy called Noah.

Over the past number of years of the introduction of new multi-disciplinary teams providing specialist care to meet the needs of women and personalising evidence based practice has proved successful for the maternity team at Medway.

Commenting, Gill Walton CEO and General Secretary said Strong leadership and a good working culture across the team at Medway are having a positive impact on the experience of the women in their care. The midwives and wider maternity team are a brilliant example of a dynamic maternity team that have worked consistently hard to improve the care that women and their families are receiving.”

 

In March this year maternity services at Medway where awarded Maternity Service of the Year at the prestigious RCM Annual Midwifery Awards. Their work on providing continuity of care throughout a woman’s pregnancy journey has been recognised by the CQC as an area of ‘outstanding practice’.

In addition, in 2017 Medway won the RCM Johnsons Award for Excellence in Maternity Care for STOMP which is a prevention bundle to reduce the occurrence of the most serious level of perineal repair and tears.

 

James Devine, Chief Executive of Medway NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“We were delighted and proud to welcome The Princess Royal to our hospital. It has been a fantastic 12 months for the Trust. Phase one of the development of our new £11.5million Emergency Department development was completed last year. Phase two is due to be completed shortly, and phase three will begin in April 2020.

“In March this year, our midwives won the coveted Midwifery Services of the Year at the Royal College of Midwives Awards. We have a lot to be proud of!
