Responding, Gill Walton CEO and General Secretary of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) said:

“It is such an honour for midwives, their colleagues and the RCM that HRH The Princess Royal is recognising their work in such a public way. As our Patron she has made many visits to maternity units across the UK. Her interest and concern for midwives, their colleagues and the women and babies they care for is obvious and heartfelt.

“This letter will mean so much to midwives and I thank HRH The Princess Royal deeply for this message of support as we begin to celebrate the Year of the Midwife.”

The letter comes on the eve of the World Health Organization designated Year of the Midwife in 2020, which the RCM will mark with events across the year.
