RCM accepts Jersey pay offer

on 02 April 2019 Government

The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) – along with other health unions - has formally accepted the improved pay offer from the Jersey Government.

The Government’s offer was accepted by 58.33% of RCM members eligible to vote with a turnout of 63.16%.

The offer means that RCM members on the island, along with their allied health colleagues such as nurses will get a three year pay deal as follows:

2018 - 3.1% consolidated increase backdated to 1st April 2018

2019 - 3.0% consolidated increase from 1st April 2019

2020 – From 1st April 2020 an increase in line with the Retail Price Index as it will be in September 2020 plus an additional 1.3%

RCM members on Jersey voted to accept the Government’s initial offer back in January this year.  However, the RCM continued to negotiate, along with other health unions to improve on the Government’s offer.

The RCM’s Employment Relations Advisor, Alice Sorby, said: “This is a good deal for our midwife and maternity support worker members and for their other colleagues in the health service on Jersey.

“For too long the pay of midwives and their colleagues had been falling behind the real cost of living, meaning they were in effect suffering significant pay cuts.

“This deal shows that the Jersey Government valuable their health service staff and the incredible work that they do. It shows what can be achieved by unions for their members by working with employer’s and government to negotiate a deal.”

The deal also includes an agreement to work with RCM, Royal College of Nursing and the Jersey Nursing Association (JNA) to close the pay gap between nurses and midwives with other allied health professionals. This is another significant achievement from the negotiations.

The deal also means that if during the three year period any other pay group receives a higher package offer through negotiation this will also apply to nurses and midwives.

In addition to the above pay offer the Government to work with the RCM RCN, and JNA to identify and completely close the pay comparability gap between Nurses and Midwives with Allied Health Professionals, with effect from 1 January 2020.

The offer include a no detriment clause meaning that if during the three year period if any other pay group receives a higher package offer through negotiation this will also apply to nurses and midwives.
