IDM gives us all an opportunity to celebrate what’s great about midwifery says RCM’s Chief Executive

By RCM on 04 May 2018 Midwives IDM - International Day of the Midwife

All this week midwives, maternity support workers, student midwives, RCM branches and midwifery societies across the UK have held local events to celebrate International Day of Midwife (IDM) 2018 with support from the Royal College of Midwives (RCM).

Annually May 5th is the internationally recognised day for highlighting the work of midwives here in the UK and across the world and tomorrow (Saturday may 5th) many more RCM members will hold events and celebrations to mark IDM 2018.

IDM was first launched by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) in 1992 and annually May 5th is the internationally recognised day for highlighting the work of midwives here in the UK and across the world.

The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Midwives leading the way with quality care’.

In wishing RCM members both here in the UK and internationally a happy International Day of the Midwife RCM’s Chief Executive and General Secretary Gill Walton said; “IDM gives us all opportunity to celebrate what’s great about midwifery and maternity care and not just here in the UK, but right across the world. It’s really important for us to be able to share with women and their families and the wider maternity team the role of the midwife and IDM gives us a chance to do that.

“Midwives and maternity support workers (MSWs) do a remarkable job ensuring women their babies and families receive the highest level of maternity care and support.

“The theme for IDM 2018 is ‘midwives leading the way with high quality care’ and the RCM is committed to supporting all our members to deliver high quality safe care.

“Throughout the course of this week in the lead up to IDM many of our RCM members have held a wonderful variety of events to highlight the work of the midwife and the creativity that has gone into many of the events that RCM staff have visited has been really impressive.”
