Calling all midwives and MSWs to celebrate International Day of The Midwife 2018

By RCM on 16 March 2018 Midwives IDM - International Day of the Midwife MSWs - Maternity Support Workers

The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) is calling all midwives, maternity support workers (MSWs) and student midwives to get involved and celebrate this year’s International Day of the Midwife (IDM) 2018.

IDM was first launched by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) in 1992 and annually May 5th is the internationally recognised day for highlighting the work of midwives here in the UK and across the world.

The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Midwives leading the way with quality care’ and the RCM is encouraging all local RCM branches and midwifery societies right across the UK to hold events in support of IDM 2018.

The RCM is running two competitions for members this year. The first being an event competition and in this category prizes will be awarded to those who submit the best photograph of their event regardless of the size. The RCM will be awarding thirteen prizes of £500 for those who enter and win the best event photograph competition.

The second competition is the hugely popular The Great Midwifery Cake Off which is returning again this year and is a chance for any members who have a flair for baking to get creative and bake their own midwifery inspired cake.

Commenting, Denise Linay Head of Organising and Engagement at the RCM says; “IDM 2018 is a real chance for us to celebrate all the amazing work that happens in midwifery right across the UK and internationally too. The success of IDM 2017 last year was phenomenal and that was down to RCM members who hosted a variety of events and celebrations locally. The events garnered much local media attention in particular pictures from the ‘Great Midwifery Cake Off’ which where really popular.

“This year the RCM is hoping that more local RCM branches and midwifery societies will get involved and  the RCM has created a really useful resource pack that is available on our website which will help you to get started on planning your event.”
